Meet the Members: Sonna Studios

Sonna Studios has grown from small beginnings in Auckland to capturing some of the world’s biggest moments. We sat down with founder, Darshil Patel, to hear the story behind the studio and his experience as part of the Alberts community.

Can you tell us the story of how Sonna Studios began?

Sonna Studios started from my days as a freelance photographer doing smaller gigs like 21sts and nightclub events. Over time, I saw there was a bigger opportunity to help companies who needed a one stop shop for event coverage across different regions. We evolved into a full service studio that not only shoots, but also handles editing in house and provides trusted contractors. It just made everything easier and more seamless for our clients and for us.

How has expanding into other countries shaped your business journey?

Expanding internationally really opened our eyes to what was possible. It has given us the chance to work on amazing large-scale events such as red carpet premieres with Universal Pictures, photographing stars such as Ariana Grande, Chris Hemsworth, Zendaya and more. Beyond the prestige, it has allowed us to represent a New Zealand based company on a global stage. From a business perspective it has also given us stability because when one market is quieter another might be booming.

What drew you into photography and content creation as a career?

It actually started when a workmate from my time at Supercheap Auto introduced me to nightclub photography. I was studying construction engineering at the time and weekends were my creative outlet, shooting events and landscapes just for fun. Over time it grew into real work and once I finished my degree I decided to take the leap and do it full-time. That is how Sonna Studios really began.

What types of projects or events do you enjoy shooting the most?

We love the energy of working with both brands and innovative startups. Clients like Airwallex, Tracksuit and Auror bring a fresh culture and energy that is inspiring. On the other hand, working with names like Apple TV+, Disney Cruise Line, Lamborghini, Bvlgari, and many more is quite surreal. For us it is about storytelling whether it is a premium brand activation or a corporate event. The people and the energy are what make it exciting..

What’s been a standout or proudest moment for you so far in your business journey?

Rather than a single milestone I would say the journey as a whole. From starting solo to working with global clients and building an in-house team, it has all been something to be proud of. When Sunday rolls around and you are actually looking forward to Monday, that is when you know you have built something special.

What do you enjoy most about working at Alberts day to day?

The atmosphere and the variety of spaces make a huge difference. We have our own nook [Agile Suite] for focus, but I can head down to the Club Lounge for a change of energy, and be around that buzz of people. It is motivating and the premium design makes it feel like a place you actually want to work in.

Are there any events, wellness perks or little touches at Alberts that stand out for you?

The convenience of having a gym and showers downstairs is a game changer. It makes it so much easier to fit in a workout or a reset into a busy schedule. Even though I have not had the chance to attend all the community events yet, just knowing they are there adds to the sense of culture and opportunity Alberts brings.

Collaboration is a big part of Alberts – have you worked with or are you keen to work with fellow members here?

Yes definitely. We have already worked quite closely with Airwallex both here and in Australia, and that has been a fantastic collaboration. We are always open to exploring new opportunities with other members too because our work is so versatile that it often complements what others are doing.

Looking ahead, what’s next for you and Sonna Studios?

We are focused on continuing to grow our team and expand further into Australia while keeping our eyes open for new opportunities globally. The way we have set things up means we can really go anywhere and that is exciting. For me it is about keeping that sense of momentum, always having a new challenge or market to look forward to.

From global red carpets to everyday collaborations at Alberts, Sonna Studios continues to thrive on creativity, connection, and new opportunities ahead. To connect with Darshil, email hello@sonnastudios.com or ask our Concierge to introduce you in the Club Lounge.
