Connected Leadership x The Helen Clark Foundation

Last week, Alberts was proud to host the Helen Clark Foundation for the launch of their latest project: a large-scale survey exploring social cohesion in Aotearoa New Zealand. The central question: What does social cohesion look like in 2025?

Report author Shamubeel Eaqub, alongside Rt Hon Helen Clark, shared compelling insights from the survey, highlighting where New Zealand is performing well compared to our Australian neighbours, and where we still have work to do. The presentation was followed by a lively and thought-provoking Q&A session.

Key takeaways from the discussion:

  • Making change: The more unequal a society is, the harder it becomes to address that inequality. A cohesive society is better placed to make difficult decisions than a polarised one.

  • Community connection: Unemployed People find it harder to feel connected to their communities.

  • Opportunity in New Zealand: 51% of New Zealanders believe hard work leads to a better life.

  • Communication in 2025: There’s a growing tendency to convince others rather than engage in open conversation. We’re seeing a shift towards avoiding conflict instead of leaning into constructive dialogue.
