The Best Wardrobes Aren’t Always New

Why sustainable fashion is becoming one of New Zealand’s biggest style conversations

A few years ago, shopping second-hand still felt more occasional – a lucky vintage find, a quick browse online, or a designer piece you happened to spot before anyone else.

Resale platforms are growing fast; designer resale stores have become regular stops; clothing rental is becoming increasingly common; and more people are thinking carefully about what deserves a place in their wardrobes before buying.

And the numbers behind it are hard to ignore.

Trade Me’s latest Circular Economy Report valued New Zealand’s second-hand market at $5.2 billion, up $500 million in a year, with clothing, footwear and accessories among the largest categories.

Platforms like Designer Wardrobe have made it easy to buy and sell pre-loved New Zealand labels like RUBY, Harris Tapper, Maggie Marilyn and Wynn Hamlyn. Recycle Boutique and Tatty’s continue to grow their loyal following, while fashion rental has become a go-to for weddings, events and one-off pieces you want to wear beautifully without buying outright.

Even brands are embracing it.

RUBY Says Recycle has become a standout example – bringing pre-loved RUBY pieces back into circulation and extending the life of clothing already beautifully made.

New Zealanders still send around 180,000 tonnes of clothing and textiles to landfill every year – roughly 34kg per person. Which is exactly why sustainable fashion feels much bigger than a passing trend.

A few styling tips that make capsule dressing feel easy heading into winter:

Build around a base palette
Black, cream, camel, navy, charcoal and chocolate brown all work beautifully together and make getting dressed feel simple.

Add one colour that feels like you
Deep green, burgundy, powder blue or a rich red can instantly lift a neutral wardrobe without feeling too much.

Look for layering pieces that earn their place
A wool coat, a blazer, a great knit and one versatile shirt will carry you through most of winter.

Mix textures
Soft knitwear with tailored trousers. Wool over silk. Denim with cashmere. The contrast makes repeat outfits feel more elevated.

Buy three outfits
A good rule: if you can style it at least three ways with pieces you already own, it probably deserves a place.

That’s what makes Sip & Swap feel so fitting at Alberts: a simple excuse to bring in a few beautiful pieces, discover something new-to-you for winter, and keep great clothing in circulation a little longer – one wardrobe at a time.
