To celebrate Earth Day this year, we have put together a list of 5 top actionable tips for you to do your bit. Earth Day is not a time for doom and gloom, it’s a day to celebrate our home and do what we can to make it a bit greener.
1. Organise a team beach clean
Aucklanders are spoilt for choice with beaches in Summer, so why not give back and do a beach clean? Sustainable Coastlines have made beach cleans very easy for New Zealanders to organise themselves. With their beach clean kits you can gather friends and family or your work team to bond and clean up an Auckland beach.
2. School up with Netflix
This long weekend why not watch an environmental doco on Netflix. Seaspiracy questions the commercial fishing industry and its effects on our oceans, My Octopus Teacher shows a film-maker’s emotional connection to the natural world through his tentacled underwater friend, and Our Planet is a series from Sir David Attenborough that exposes the fragility of some of the world’s most remote ecosystems.
3. Sustainable workplace
Ok it’s great that you want to make an effort to be greener but you do already owe yourself a pat on the back for choosing Alberts as your workspace. Our buildings are upcycled rather than new builds and, thanks to some great research, we know that our carbon emissions as a business are 2 x less than that of new builds. 4. Shop smart
Hitting Commercial Bay or Newmarket this weekend? Before you head out read up on how to shop sustainably using this toolkit from the Earth Day Organisation.
5. Tree planting
Another fantastic initiative from Sustainable Coastlines, you can do a team day out and join their next tree planting on Thursday, June 16. All equipment and refreshments are provided, so your team can just turn up and get stuck in. Feel good factor – free of charge!
